First Steps is Inner-City Scholarship Fund's newest initiative, launched in 2007, to provide scholarships to Pre-kindergarten children to enroll in an inner-city Catholic school. The program was created because statistics show that the earlier a child enters a Catholic school, the better the chance the student will graduate high school and go onto college. This program is the "first step" in the Be A Student's Friend program, allowing interested sponsors to support the same boy or girl throughout elementary and high school.
Currently, 71 students have First Steps scholarships, thanks to sponsors who underwrite the cost of tuition at $1,100 per year. The student's family is responsible for the difference in full tuition. Sponsors receive progress reports and drawings from their students throughout the year and have the option of developing a close relationship with their student or remaining anonymous.
This year First Steps will provide over $70,000 in scholarships to help students receive an education at a Catholic school. There are many additional students enrolled in our Pre-K programs throughout Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island who need help. Support for these students will help ensure they are provided with the necessary tools and resources to achieve their dreams.
